CABLE - Law Enforcement Peer Support Training

Course Syllabus

A 36 hour intensive training for Peer Support Personnel. Peers will learn the skills needed to provide effective peer support and when and how to make an effective referral to their EAP. Video tapes, personal accounts and an adult learning model will be used foster dialogue and discussion. Peers will also have opportunities to practice their skills through role plays.   • Active listening skills
  • Maintaining healthy boundaries
  • The difference between peer support and counseling
  • Maintaining confidentiality among peers
  • Effects of cumulative, chronic stress on the mind and body
  • How to identify and refer peers struggling with compulsive behaviors or addictions including gambling and substance abuse
  • Physiological response to acute stress
  • Post Traumatic Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Relationship issues
  • Substance abuse, gambling and other addictions
  • Domestic violence
  • Bereavement and grief
  • Suicide assessment and referral
  • Healthy life skills for stress management
  • State police policy regarding peer support and confidentiality
  • Making effective referrals to the contracted employee assistance provider
  • Critical incident Stress Management
