"L.E.A.P." For Successful Negotiations

Lt. Michael Woody Dr. Xavier Amador
Lt. Michael Woody (Ret'd.) Dr. Xavier Amador

Michael Woody is currently President of the CIT International Organization. He retired from the Akron Police Dept. (OH) in 2002 after 25 years of service. His last 4 years he was the Director of Training for the Department. He graduated from the University of Akron with a Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree and was a secondary education school teacher before becoming a police officer.

Mike is credited with bringing the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program to Ohio in 2000 and helping to spread it throughout the state and nation.

In 2005 the First National CIT Conference was held in Columbus, Ohio with nearly 700 persons attending. Mike coordinated this historical event.

Mr. Woody has consulted with The Bureau of Justice Assistance, The Council of State Governments, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the GAINS Center and national and international law enforcement agencies regarding CIT.

Dr. Amador’s expertise has made him a regular contributor to the Today Show and a featured guest on ABC Good Morning America, Prime Time Live, CBS This Morning, NBC Nightly News, 60 Minutes, CNN, Dateline, ABC’s World News Tonight, Fox News, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and many others.

During his 25 years as a psychologist, Dr. Amador has been an international consultant to companies and government agencies. His forensic cases include the Unabomber, PFC Lynndie England, Elizabeth Smart Kidnapping, and Zacarias Moussaoui trials.

LEAP (Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner) shows clinicians, family members, and law enforcement how to quickly gain the trust of someone who is angry or paranoid. It gives you the tools you need to persuade someone in "denial" about mental illness to accept treatment and services.

Dr. Amador is a family member of a person with schizophrenia.
